BUS DRIVER-TRANSPORTATION
Primary Purpose: Operate school bus and related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation of students and other authorized personnel on assigned routes and to and from other destinations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Possess a clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endoresements (or be willing to obtain within a set period of time)
Must hold or be able to obtain a DOT Medical Examiner's Certification
Must hold or be able to obtain a School Bus Safety Training Certification
Must be a high school graduate or hold a GED certification
Must be at least 21 years of age
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
Ability to read, interpret, and follow route sheets as well as read and use a map
Ability to manage student behavior
Ability to use a 2-way radio
Ability to operate safety equipment
Ability to communicate effectively with others
Maintain CPR and First Aide training
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Vehicle Operation
1. Drive school bus following assigned route and adhering to established schedules
2. Adhere to procedural expectations and directives
3. Perform pre-and post trip inspections according to specifications to ensure the bus can be operated safely and notify mechanics of needed repairs
4. Keep the assigned bus clean by sweeping/disinecting daily, cleaning windows regularly, emptying trash
5. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and complete required corresponding reports
6. Assist with additional routes and assignments as directed
7. Occasionally work a flexible schedule as needed
8. Work cooperatively with the bus monitor and other individuals who ride the bus to provide support to students.
Student Management
1. Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations with particular attention to the danger zone around the bus. Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
2. Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management strategies with students. Report student discipline problems to the transporatation director and communicate with parents and teachers regarding student behavior when warranted.
3. Maintain seating charts for the bus and update as needed.
4. Ensure that students arrive at their destination safe, on time, and ready to learn.
Safety
1. Follow established safety procedures including emergency evacuation of students when the situation warrants and administering CPR/First Aid if needed.
2. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
3. Check the bus after each trip/stop for sleeping students.
4. Operate equipment according to established safety procedures to include seat belts, harnesses, car and booster seats, wheelchair tie downs and shoulder-lap belts, and any other safety devices.
5. Ensure proper working condition of safety and emergency equipment
6. Correct unsafe conditions and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable
Other
1. Operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with dispatchers to ensure effective and efficient operations
2. Complete and maintain accurate, up-to-date, and timely federal, state, local, and district records and reports as required
3. Adhere to all district and transportation department rules, regulations, and policies
4. Demonstrate professional behavior and work harmoniously with fellow employees and other stakeholders
5. Maintain confidentiality in regards to students and student records
6. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required
Mental/Physical Demands:
Safetly operate school bus and white fleet vehicles; two-way radio; computer for clocking in and occasional reports; emergency and safety equipment including but not limited to fire extinguisher, traffic cones/safety triangles, seat belts, safety vests, wheelchairs, car seats, special needs equipment
Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling
Occasional light lifting and carrying of equipment; Heavy lifting, carrying, pulling and/or pushing in the event of an emergency
Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs/steps
Work early mornings and afternoons; occasional irregular work hours for early release and ohter situations; occasional prolonged work hours
Maintain emotional control over stress
